How Is Pigmentation Formed?
Melanin is a natural skin pigment that is responsible for our skin, hair, and eye colour; and it is produced by cells called melanocytes. Due to increased levels of melanin in the skin, pigmentations such as melasma, sun spots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) are formed. As excessive sun exposure stimulates melanocytes, it triggers uneven production of melanin and eventually results in uneven dark spots known as pigments.

The Most Common Types Of Pigmentation
The most prevalent types of skin pigment conditions include:
Melasma:
Melasma is a skin condition characterized by brown or blue-gray patches or freckle-like spots. It usually appears on the cheeks and is caused by the overproduction of melanin. Melasma can happen overnight or build up slowly over the course of several months.

Acne scars:
The skin is inflamed after the acne has developed. When the inflammation subsides, the blemishes heal below the surface of your skin, but it does not regenerate enough tissue to even out the top layer. Generally, scars fade over time. However, in cases of severe acne, they can be permanent.
Sun Spots:
Sunspots are found on areas of skin that have been exposed to the sun frequently. They appear as smaller spots, no more than a few centimeters in size, with a partially varying brownish hue. Sunspots are located at the skin’s superficial level and are not raised.

Discovery
Pico Laser
PICO Toning by Discovery PICO uses the most advanced laser technology for the treatment of large pores, decoloration of skin, pigmented lesions, aged skin, and tattoos. The energy from the laser will penetrate through the outer layer of skin, directly targeting the underlying skin tissue to destroy the pigments.
How Does It Help?
Due to the laser’s short pulse duration, picosecond laser pulses can deliver more energy and fire more shots within picoseconds. When the laser is delivered to the pigmented lesions, the laser energy breaks down stubborn pigments into tiny fragments which will be removed by our body. This is known as the photoacoustic effect.
Photoacoustic Effect
The Pico Laser pulses generate a pure photoacoustic effect that targets the pigments without affecting the surrounding tissues.

Pico Laser vs Q-Switch Laser
Pico and Q-switch lasers operate by delivering laser pulses to the area of interest on the skin. However, Pico Laser delivers these pulses and breaks down pigmentation into smaller fragments much faster than Q-Switch Laser. Thus, results from Pico Laser are more effective with fewer treatment sessions compared to using Q-Switch Laser.
